Boiler replacement in Hertfordshire

Thinking about a new boiler because the old one keeps failing or no longer suits your home? Send one enquiry and a local engineer can visit and quote.

How do I know it is time for a new boiler?

Age on its own is not the deciding factor. The usual prompts are a boiler that breaks down repeatedly, repair bills that keep adding up, parts that are getting hard to find, or an engineer telling you the boiler is unsafe or uneconomic to fix. Rising gas bills and a home that never quite gets warm can also suggest an older boiler is working harder than it should.

Changes to the house matter as well. A loft conversion, an extension or an extra bathroom can leave a boiler that was once the right choice struggling to keep up.

How do I choose the right kind of boiler?

The answer depends mostly on how your household uses hot water, so it helps to think about that before the visit:

  • How many bathrooms and showers are there, and are two ever used at the same moment?
  • Is there a hot water cylinder somewhere in the house, and are there water tanks up in the loft?
  • How many people share the home?
  • How strong is your mains water pressure at the kitchen tap?

A combi boiler supplies hot water straight from the mains with no cylinder, which frees up space. A boiler paired with a cylinder can store hot water for several taps at once. Changing from one arrangement to the other is possible but involves more work, so the engineer will usually explain what each choice means for your home before quoting.

Can the boiler go somewhere else?

Often it can. People move boilers out of kitchens into lofts, utility rooms or airing cupboards, especially when a cylinder is removed. The new position has to suit the flue, which must meet clearance rules from windows, doors and boundaries, and a condensing boiler needs a route for its condensate drain. Moving a boiler adds work, so ask the engineer to price it separately.

What rules apply to a new gas boiler?

  • The installation must be carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
  • The work must be notified to building control. Registered engineers can do this themselves, and you should then receive a certificate showing the installation meets the Building Regulations.
  • In England, new gas boilers must meet minimum efficiency standards and be fitted with suitable controls.

Keep the certificate, the warranty and the boiler manual together. A buyer's solicitor may ask for the certificate when you sell, and the manual helps whoever services the boiler in future.

Should I think about a heat pump instead?

Some homeowners ask about it, especially when a boiler needs replacing anyway. A heat pump is a different kind of system that often needs larger radiators, a hot water cylinder and a careful look at insulation, so it is a bigger decision than a like-for-like swap. Not every gas engineer installs them. If you want to explore it, say so in your enquiry, and check gov.uk for the current rules on grants for low-carbon heating.

What should the quote tell me?

To compare quotes fairly, ask for these points in writing:

  • the make and model of the proposed boiler, and why it suits your home
  • whether removing the old boiler and any tanks or cylinder is included
  • any changes to pipework, the flue or the condensate drain
  • whether the system will be cleaned or flushed, and whether a filter is fitted
  • the controls included, such as a programmable thermostat
  • the warranty on the boiler and on the installation, and its conditions
  • how long you will be without heating and hot water

What should I mention when I enquire?

Say what kind of boiler you have now, if you know, roughly how old it is, how many bedrooms and bathrooms the home has, and whether there is a cylinder or loft tanks. If you are planning building work, give rough dates, because sizing a boiler for the finished house can save replacing it twice.

What happens next?

With your consent, the enquiry goes to one Gas Safe registered engineer who works locally. They will be in touch to book a visit, look at your current system and give you a quote directly. There is no charge for enquiring and no obligation to go ahead.

We are not installers. Herts Heating Repairs is an independent enquiry service, and the engineer may pay us for introducing you.

What if I smell gas while waiting?

Do not wait for the visit. Ventilate the home, avoid switches and flames, turn off the gas at the meter if it is safe, and phone the National Gas Emergency Service. The number is 0800 111 999, free at any time.

Who you will hear from

We pass your enquiry to one local heating engineer who covers your postcode. It is never sent to a list of companies.

We only pass enquiries to heating engineers whose registration we have checked on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see their registration ID card when they arrive.

Herts Heating Repairs is an independent enquiry service, not a heating company. With your consent, we pass your enquiry to one local heating engineer who covers your area. The engineer may pay us a fee for each introduction.
