What are homes like in Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield?
Welwyn Garden City was founded in 1920 as England's second garden city, planned with wide verges, green spaces and houses in a consistent neo-Georgian style. It was later designated a new town and grew considerably after the war. Hatfield combines Old Hatfield, the historic area near Hatfield House, with a post-war new town and newer developments on former industrial land.
Can I change the outside of a garden city house?
In much of Welwyn Garden City, changes to the outside of a house are controlled to protect the town's original look, through the conservation area and the council's estate management scheme. A new flue on the front of a house, or a condensate pipe running across a visible wall, may need consent. If your home is in the older part of town, check before agreeing to move a boiler, and tell the engineer so they can suggest positions that keep the frontage unchanged.
Many of these houses are now around a century old. Solid walls, original chimney breasts and rooms that have been knocked through can all affect how well the radiators keep up, so mention any rooms that never get warm.
Letting to students in Hatfield?
The University of Hertfordshire brings a large student population to Hatfield, and many family houses are let as shared homes. Every rented home with gas needs its safety check each year, and the record must go to the tenants. With a new group often moving in each academic year, it helps to time the check so a fresh record is ready before move-in day. Shared houses also put a heavy load on hot water in the mornings, which matters when a boiler is replaced.
If you rent a room in a shared house, report heating faults to your landlord or agent rather than booking a repair yourself.
What about post-war homes in both towns?
New-town houses and flats from the 1950s and 1960s have usually had their heating changed at least once. Boilers in kitchen cupboards and combis in place of old cylinders are common. Say what you have now and roughly how old it is.
How does an enquiry work?
Fill in the form and, if you agree, it goes to one Gas Safe registered engineer covering your postcode. They contact you, discuss the work and price it with you. We are an enquiry service rather than an installer, and the engineer may pay a fee to this site. Asking is free and you are not obliged to go ahead.
Who you will hear from
We pass your enquiry to one local heating engineer who covers your postcode. It is never sent to a list of companies.
We only pass enquiries to heating engineers whose registration we have checked on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see their registration ID card when they arrive.
Herts Heating Repairs is an independent enquiry service, not a heating company. With your consent, we pass your enquiry to one local heating engineer who covers your area. The engineer may pay us a fee for each introduction.
