A radiator that is cold at the top usually needs bleeding. Cold at the bottom can point to sludge in the system.

Useful to have to hand

None of this is needed to send an enquiry, but it helps the engineer understand the job sooner.

  • Boiler make and model

Printed on the front panel, or on a label underneath or behind the flap.

  • Any fault code or light

Letters or numbers on the display, such as F28 or EA, or a light that is flashing.

  • What has stopped

Heating, hot water or both, and roughly when it started. Radiators cold at the top or bottom are worth mentioning.

  • Your last service date

If you have the boiler logbook or a previous gas safety record, the date of the last visit helps.
